Chapter 11

Captain LaGrange kept working with the little plastic square on the way to the closest friendly base. Running his thumb over it consistently worked to activate the hologram and he eventually got used to the irritating buzz in his translator while the audio played.

If he held it in his hand, Major Ozark could also get it to play but not consistently. Doc was never able to activate the square on his own, even with Captain LaGrange holding it.

"Why does it only work for you?" he asked, turning it over in his hand. "What is it keyed to that makes it work?"

"Magic," Michael said and Major Ozark snorted.

"Technology, is more likely," she said. "Probably the same stuff that made the light show crowns work."

"Maybe," Captain LaGrange said. "But I thought that was relatively new tech, as far as all that went. Nobody on Earth has it, at least. Or any way to interface with it as far as we know."

"As far as you know," Major Ozark repeated. "What if whoever sent that has older technology that's more advanced than the Orvax. What did that one guy say? They've been here long enough to try and remove any trace of the Orvax? That would mean the Orvax have been here before and the shadowy conspiracy assholes knew about them and what to look for when they got to Earth."

"Maybe," Michael said slowly. "They were following old star charts and used tech they don't really understand to do it. I think they've lost a lot of their own technology over the years so I guess anything's possible."

"Okay, so, figure whatever is in the message square works with the alien tech you've got inside you. Maybe not originally but they found a way to make it work, like, the alien version of chewing gum and a paper clip, right?" Major Ozark watched him and he nodded

"Alright," he said. "Let's say that works. What then?"

"Where's the alien tech it would be interfacing with? Do you have some kind of antenna in your thumb that it's talking to?"

Michael shook his head. "No, it's probably talking to the microscopic robots in my blood."

"The what?" Doc demanded.

Captain LaGrange looked at the injured Marine who had fallen asleep with the painkillers. It wasn't ideal but he didn't know how far they were from a friendly base and nobody was answering their calls for medical help. There was a barrier between the back and the cab and the intercom to talk to the driver was off.

"So, this is classified," Michael said. "And not just the government will get all up in your shit classified but the aliens will remove you from the planet if they find out you're talking about it classified. Alright?"

"Well, that's not ominous," Major Ozark said but Doc just nodded.

"Alien tech, man, of course it's classified. I'm surprised they haven't tried to dissect you to figure out what you've got going on."

"Nothing for them to find. The bionanos don't show up on any of our scans and they've already shared the physical specs on the translator in my ear.
